I’m back in Cabo again, wedding over and family returned east to in their proper roosts. It’s hotter than when I left in January. The season is inching closer to summer. I was so excited about escaping the horrific Northeast weather that I forgot just how much the temperature informs the culture here. I have mentioned the colors, the flowers, the water, and sand and I am sure there will be more, but right now I am focused on fabrics. The clothing du jour in this temperate zone is light, very light, and often but not always pale or white. The best styles drift across the body without really embracing the skin. Ah, summer fabrics! As much as I cherish my cashmere sweaters and my wonderful old black leather jacket, the fabrics of summer whisper to me rather than speak aloud.
In Georgia, where I am from, there is a vacation place down next Charleston, SC. Its an island off the coast, named Sea Island. It has the perfect beach, with marshes on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. It is also where the fabric called Sea Island cotton came from. During the sweltering dog days of summer, when both the humidity and the temperature can easily stay in the high 90s and low 100s, Sea Island cotton is the fabric you want. It is sheer, very soft, fine and just opaque enough to wear in public.
After the winter we have all had, I know that I am thrilled to be able to shed the winter layers and slip on the soft fabrics of summer.
Ah! I forgot about sea island cotton. Would be great in Mexico
