Tried, True & New ~ Hanky Panky

May 14, 2012

There is nothing quite as satisfying as owning an original.  Americans love to discover new products, seize the message and then, spread the news.  Such was the story of the Hanky Panky stretch lace thong which was catapulted into the spotlight when this silhouette emerged as a hot new trend in the lingerie market.  But do not be deceived, this little underthing has been part of the Hanky Panky cadre for well over 25 years, slowly, steadily and surely rising in popularity until the Wall Street Journal decided, in 2004, to give credit where credit was due.  Much imitated since but never truly the same, Hanky Panky has just gone one step further to solidify it’s signature design.  Integrating the brand logo into the iconic lace design, every woman who prefers the original, can now prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that she is a true fan.

Fable Inspired Lingerie~ Under The Root

May 10, 2012
Under The Root is a fable inspired, intimate apparel label, designing and supporting a conscious culture with hand structured loungerie and boudoir accessories. Designer Jennifer Brown utilizes reclaimed, sustainable, and many times vintage materials for each design and entire process.
.
When asked why underthings? Jennifer said, “I am intensely drawn to design pieces which embellish even the most modest bodies.  Playful, demure, and innocent winks of grandeur are a few of the themes which pull me into the cutting table late at night.  I want people to whirl around in their days and nights, storytelling their own fables or becoming their own stories. The human body is magikal, the pieces are each meticulously handmade, and therefore unique, as you, throughout every seam.”

Tried, True & New ~ Second Base

April 29, 2012

In July of 2010, I wrote my first brief about the then just born Second Base® brand.   Ever since then, I have been a real fan of these under layers that discreetly add just a bit more coverage to a woman’s décolleté.  Part of the reason is the phenomenally soft fabric that feels light, sumptuous and “not really there” on the wearer’s skin.  Now, Second Base® has augmented their stable of demi-camis by adding the midi and maxi tanks and cami tops. Made from the same formidable silky material, my favorite is the maxi, mainly because leggings are my RTW of choice and they are  ”just the right length”  for the little extra camouflage I desire.  I really love the tank.  It has changed the way I manipulate my wardrobe.

Chromat ~ Structural Elements

March 20, 2012
Drawing from Becca McCharen’s theoretical background in architecture and urban design, Chromat focuses on structural experiments for the human body. Chromat began in 2008 as an extension of McCharen’s degree in architecture design. Her continued interest in scaffolding, city maps, wearable exoskeletons and the intricacies of undergarments have been explored as each new collection develops. The most recent Chromat A/W12 cool world collection was inspired by exaggerated constructions of femininity in cartoons, female superheroes and villains and distorted Disney characters.

Kriss Soonik ~ Super Heroine Lingerie

March 8, 2012

Even though the Kriss Soonik Collection is not Indie new, it was a revelation for me when Laura Fitzpatrick, owner of Oh Baby Lingerie in Portland Oregon, insisted I review the line with her at Curve.  This collection  draws its inspiration from the super heroine persona: sexy, powerful and slightly defiant.  Beautiful underpinnings and loungerie designed with a modern take set this brand apart projecting an artistic and feminine attitude. Based in London with an international following, Kriss Soonik intimates are just beginning to percolate in selected boutiques in the USA.

What is Design Lab?

The Design Lab is a creative laboratory dedicated to uncovering new talent and new ideas in the intimate world of lingerie. It could be an indie talent struggling for exposure, or an innovation in textiles destined to impact merchandising and design. Perhaps it is a new product from old friends, the tried and true vendors that form the infrastructure of our industry. Whatever I find, the Design Lab is a place for artistry and imagination to percolate and be discovered.
