I had the pleasuring of speaking with Ruth DeGolia, Executive Director of the non-profit Mercado Global. Ruth shares her passion about transforming many Guatemalan women’s lives by giving them the resources to create and sell their high quality woven accessories worldwide. Indigenous female artisans are highly skilled in ancient Mayan weaving techniques yet face very limited sales opportunities. Mercado Global connects women to international sales opportunities with major retailers and provides technical training for women to improve their weaving and sewing skills. These women are breaking the cycle of extreme poverty and becoming entrepreneurs in their own right with thanks to Ruth’s team.
