Remembrance of Things Past ~ Only Hearts

One of my oldest memories as a child, although slightly blurry, is visiting my grandparents for Sunday dinner at their summer home in Neponset, NY.  The house was a weather beaten 3 story clapboard with a wraparound porch anchored by giant blue hydrangea bushes and filled with rattan furniture, the casual beach décor of another time.  Everything inside and out was a testimony to their era, genteel and aged as fine things were handed down from generation to generation.  I still have the tiny hand-blown glass animals that floated in finger-bowls on her formal table. But it was the needlepoint covered mahogany footstools set beneath the damask wing chairs in her living room that became fixated in my psyche.  As a teenager, they were bequeathed to me as a keepsake forever reminding me of a lifestyle abandoned by modern society in search of the next new thing.  I appreciate the evolution of style, but nothing reflects the history of good taste quite like the bespoke luxuries of the past.

It’s nice to see a remembrance of things past.
