Carvaro Lingerie: French Lace Meets Italian Excellence

By ESTELLE PULESTON

Based in Italy, Carvaro is a new lingerie brand proving that you don’t need to completely redesign the bra or brief to create intimates that stand out – you just need a good eye for fabrics.

The brand was founded a year and a half ago by Mariana Rodríguez, a Venezuelan-born fashion and product designer who has always been captivated by fine-quality materials. Inspired by fashion houses such as Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Riccardo Tisci-era Givenchy, her graduate collection back in 2013 was awash with corsetry and embroidered lace. It was a direction that helped her to land a job with prestigious and unabashedly-luxurious lingerie label Rosamosario where, surrounded by decadent pieces crafted from the finest of fabrics, her love for lingerie design was solidified.

For Rodríguez, good lingerie is akin to an expensive perfume or a trip to the spa – something that a woman indulges in just to treat herself and to make herself feel good. Carvaro is shaped around this ethos, focusing on premium fabrics and artisanal construction techniques rather than trying to design items that look ‘sexy’. It’s simply about enjoying something beautiful, and beautifully crafted!

There’s also an emphasis on sustainability. For example, all Carvaro garments are made to order in Italy to avoid the waste that comes from overproduction. Materials are hand-cut for maximum precision, and then dyed in house so that water wastage can be carefully monitored. And as for what those materials are, Rodríguez is particularly keen on using natural fiber fabrics such as silk and cotton-based laces.

All of Carvaro’s laces are produced on Calais-Caudry® Leavers looms, making them some of the highest-quality laces in modern existence. Typically, Rodríguez starts out her design process with a mood board and creates a clear vision of how she wants the final look to be before sourcing the necessary materials. But she also likes to embrace spontaneity – like when she stumbled across the unique butterfly lace used in her Brigitte range.

“When I saw the fabric, I instantly fell in love with it,” she told me, “My mind quickly drew connections to past inspirations, like a McQueen collection from 2006 where models’ dresses were covered in butterflies.” This freedom to change direction when there’s a compelling reason to do so is one of the things she most values about being a creative director in control of her own brand.

Currently, Carvaro offers four timeless silhouettes which are each available in various lace options: an underwired balconette, a wireless triangle bra with a front clasp fastening, a cheeky-cut brief, and a thong. They’re classic, uncomplicated silhouettes, made special through their gorgeous fabrics.

More styles are coming though, which will expand the range of options while staying true to the brand’s timeless aesthetic. Rodríguez is putting the finishing touches on the SS25 collection to be unveiled in September. It will also feature bustiers, corsets, pajamas and swimsuits, as well as expanded sizing.

Currently, Carvaro lingerie is available in bra sizes 32A to 36C and clothing sizes XXS to XL. Prices range from 105-265€, approximately $115-$290.
