Somewhere Never: A Joyful Celebration of Embroidered Color

By ESTELLE PULESTON

Joyful, playful and unapologetically colorful, Somewhere Never is an indie lingerie brand with real personality. It was launched in 2024 by British designer Felicity Kear, who discovered her passion when she took lingerie and corsetry classes during a semester abroad at FIT, New York while studying fashion design.

After graduating, she moved to Australia where she worked for high-profile names in the ‘statement intimates’ category such as Honey Birdette, before life led her to Los Angeles and then finally back to New York again where Something Never was born.

At the heart of Kear’s lingerie creations are its embroideries, all custom-designed and exclusive to the brand. Craving something more unique than the lingerie industry’s ubiquitous florals, and favoring embroidery over lace for its much greater motif and color-mixing possibilities, she takes the kinds of graphic patterns more typically found on outerwear and reimagines them for intimates.

She’s particularly inspired by mid-century design, art and architecture, and her embroidery ideas are rendered in saturated, high-contrast palettes and a mixture of matte, shiny and glittery lurex yarns for added dimension. The Desert Heat range even incorporates yarn that glows under UV light for those after a statement party outfit!

The embroideries are produced by a Swiss embroidery house that has been creating couture fabrics and perfecting its techniques for over a century. Kear and their team work together to design the patterns in a process which starts out with hand-sketching, before being recreated as a digital illustration and finally ‘punched’ to translate them into a format that can be read and followed by a digital embroidery machine.

The actual garment construction takes place at a small factory in Romania in Europe, or is occasionally undertaken by Kear herself in New York. The product range focuses on soft, wirefree bralettes all designed to fit flexibly, accompanied by a range of brief and thong silhouettes.

More than anything, Something Never is a lingerie brand designed to be seen. Kear views her pieces more as fashion accessories than traditional underwear. There are square neckline pieces that lend themselves perfectly to peeking out from under a V neck, designs with bold rear strap configurations that can be flaunted under a backless outfit, and bustier-like shapes with detachable straps that could easily be styled as a crop top.

The website also sells silicone pasties to help you show off these sheer pieces with confidence, but if you’re after a little more coverage than that, she also suggests considering them as a kind of jewelry and layering them over things such as t-shirts and slip dresses. In the future, Kear has plans to introduce longer-line or opaque silk garments, for an even more seamless underwear-to-outerwear transition.

Somewhere Never creations are produced in small, limited quantities, and are currently available in an XS-XL size range, or in the case of certain bras, seven flexi-fit sizes covering 30C through 34F or 38DD. Prices run from $55 to $150.
