Colombia-based Soreil is an small, locally-crafted brand by Jackie Sasson that creates lingerie for the modern romantic. Using delicate fabrics, dainty details and unexpected silhouette elements, her designs perfectly blend classic femininity with contemporary trends.
Soreil’s latest release is a stylish journey through astrological symbolism that she’s titled Cosmos, and it’s the culmination of over four years’ careful product design, evolution and testing. Inspired by studying Kabbalah, the designer in Sasson soon began thinking about how to translate the deep new connection she was feeling to astrology into a lingerie collection.
She turned over many options in her head. Should she design a set for each zodiac sign? Four ranges colored for each of the elements: fire, earth, air and water? Eventually, fueled by a period of creative stimulation during the pandemic, the idea of embroidery came to her, and so she set about learning all about this new-to-her technique.
“Although I have a background in textile design and understand how to create repeat patterns, embroidery was a completely different language,” she recalls, “I had to learn about thread continuity, machine stitches, and technical limitations I had never worked with before.”
Another hurdle was the sheer number of pieces she needed to perfect. Cosmos is split into two sub-ranges: one black with a celestial pattern in silver thread, the other a semi-personalizable range in midnight blue which includes eight mix-n-match silhouettes so customers can build their own look, and with each of those eight pieces available in a choice of 12 embroideries to represent each star sign.
“When I realized the complexity of what I was building, I made a decision to give it the time it needed,” she says, “In today’s world, that is almost a luxury. Everything moves so fast: new collections, new trends, constant innovation. For me, taking my time is essential.”
When she was invited to showcase her work on the runway at last year’s Bogotá Fashion Week however, she knew the time had come to put Cosmos out into the world. After four years of development, she had just two months to finally bring it to life with the help of the all-female Soreil atelier team.
And it was worth it. The ‘choose your own zodiac sign’ aspect in particular really resonated with her customer base; after the show, those pieces sold out before Sasson had even had a chance to publish all of the campaign imagery they’d shot for the range, which had included unique styling to give each sign its own narrative and visual identity.
If you missed out, don’t worry – Sasson is planning a full restock, and also intends to keep Cosmos in the Soreil range long-term as a brand signature. Cosmos may have come about at a time when astrological symbolism is having a fashion moment, but to her, it’s more than that.
“Through my studies, I came to understand astrology as something much deeper and real, not just a trend,” she says, “Cosmos allowed me to reach a place creatively where I could fully express my ideas without holding back.”
The Cosmos range is available in sizes S-XL and is priced from approximately $40-120.
