Whatever Lola Wants – Lola Devlin

By ALISON CONNOLLY

If you aren’t familiar with the song Whatever Lola Wants from the musical “Damn Yankees”, you might want to play that first to fully understand the inspiration behind today’s lingerie feature.  The works you see here are by Los Angeles-based designer Lisa Nicole Harbottle for the luxury lingerie brand Lola Devlin.  Founded in 2009 with a shop on Etsy, the label is about to reach new heights with its recently re-glammed website and new campaign images featuring the highly popular pin-up model Doris Mayday.  The designs take cues from 1950s retro culture; from saucy pinups in pompom slippers to pulp fiction cover art.  The latest collection features items handmade from silk charmeuse, chiffon, lace, and ruffled trims here and there.  As the designer says on her website, “Small pleasures in life begin with something exquisite, something to feel irresistible in & ends with you: one woman in a million who is matchless to all others”.  Sounds like something spoken by someone who truly believes glamour is possible in everyday life.  This is a brand that’s not about creating vintage replicas, but about providing the modern woman something utterly fabulous that nods to a collectively favorite era in lingerie design.  As I look through this darling collection of babydolls, bralettes and bed jackets to add to my lingerie wish list I can’t help but recall the classic Whatever Lola Wants lyric “Give in. Give in.

I always get, what I aim for
And your heart and soul, is what I came for.
Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets
Take off your coat, Don’t you know you can’t win
You’re no exception to the rule
I’m irresistible you fool, Give in
Give in, you’ll never win
