Classic Comfort: Yellamaris’ Sustainable Sleepwear & Homewear

By ESTELLE PULESTON

A family business now in its second generation with Johanna Kölling at the helm, Yellamaris is a German sleepwear and loungewear brand that stands for timeless style, crafted to last and made with respect for people and the planet.

Think classic woven or jersey pajama sets, simple sleep shirts, comfy nightdresses, and cozy housecoats and bathrobes, all fabricated from premium-quality, natural fiber-based fabrics including organic cotton, merino wool, modal and viscose.

Since its launch in 1992, the company has worked exclusively with European suppliers, both to minimize the carbon footprint of its production process and to ensure the utmost quality. Printed fabrics are created exclusively for Yellamaris in Italy and France, while its soft organic cotton jerseys are knitted in the Swabian Alps. At minimum, every fabric is GOTS-certified.

Personal favorites from their current collection include the lace-trimmed micromodal chemises and the vibrantly-printed pieces, as well as a boxy cotton poplin sleep shirt and blouse – one with eye-catching pleating across the back and the other with a single oversized pleat detail – which have a relaxed, comfortable fit yet also look smart and structured enough that they could pass as (pretty chic!) outerwear.

In fact, there is even a maxi-length nightdresses and a draped kaftan which I wouldn’t hesitate to wear as cover-ups at the beach, and that’s key to Yellamaris’ approach to homewear: they want their pieces to feel versatile and like something you could live in on lazy weekends, whether that’s a cozy jacket you could keep on for an autumn walk, or a casual sleep/lounge set you’d be perfectly happy to open the front door in.

The most popular pieces are the striped and Vichy-checked flannel pajamas – an absolute classic – for winter, and the cotton jersey options in summer. The brand releases two main collections per year, alongside two smaller Resort and holiday season capsule collections.

However, as part of their commitment to sustainability, which includes avoiding overproduction, everything is made to order. The company has its own sewing workshop in Germany, which makes them much more agile; they’re not bound to factory minimums and can easily adapt their sewing plans to whatever’s currently a hit with customers.

“We do have a little fabric waste due to technical production issues,” notes Kölling, but says that they counteract this by creating “patchwork shorts, limited edition, to use all the fabric offcuts.” In addition, sample pieces are donated to charitable organizations once they’re no longer required, so there really is next to no wastage.

If you prioritize comfort, environmental responsibility, and having something you can wear for years to come, Yellamaris is worth a look. These are the kind of rest-enhancing garments that are guaranteed to enhance your down time!

Yellamaris’ women’s range is priced from 89€ to 349€ (approximately $105 to $410), and equates to US sizes 6 through 16.
