Eternal Seduction
Jonathan Swift wrote: “Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others.” Walking on East 33rd Street in NYC last week, I happened upon this vision of a woman’s dress in the shop window of Alpine Creative Services. The designer, Rubin Singer, has managed to deconstruct a classic shape and render it new by the unexpected manipulation of a basic material. It is sculpted completely from pieces of paper. Using folds, pleats, ruffles and textures, a completely modern garment has been created. The white color allows the form to retain its virginal history while its very essence, paper, forces us to recognize its vulnerability. It intrigues me because it captures the eternal seduction of beautiful lingerie. It also embodies some of the intelligence that my colleagues in the Trend Analysis profession are forecasting for Intimates in 2010. We see here a capsule of some of Concepts Paris’ predictions for a lingerie market they describe as Gorgeous, Unusual and Dramatic.
