Without a doubt, my favorite job was being a hosiery buyer at Macy’s in the 80’s.  It was a different era of merchandising then.  No one signed my orders or approved my selection decisions. I was given goals and expected to meet them.  When I was recruited into the position, I was directed to change the face of the department from boring beige to must have legwear.  In those days color was an anomaly and technology consisted of reinforced toe vs. sheer toe pantyhose, control tops and support legs.  The volume generated from these basics was phenomenal and of course, there was no question that these numbers were critical to profit.  The intention was to sustain the essentials while building a fashion identity.  It was not too difficult to find creativity in a rising leg dressing market, but innovation in yarn construction and fit was a real challenge.  Confession of an X hosiery buyer; I hated wearing pantyhose because the waistband always dug in.  I always said that whoever figured out how to eliminate the binding elastic stranglehold at the waistline would strike gold.
