If you’re a fan of graphic, eye-catching shapes and elastic strapping in your lingerie collection (and beyond it), I think you’ll like Cosmogonie. Based in Paris, the brand was created by designer Julie Mechery Grall, who left a career assistant-directing music videos to launch what she describes as a “sexy, daring and positive” lingerie line that celebrates the female figure.

Take the Black Diamond bodysuit for example, with its super-sized open oval that sweeps from above the bust down to below the navel, and frames a delicate rhinestone chain detail. Or the Lov plunge bra, where a grid of rhinestone chains above the cup edge gives the impression of cut outs even where there are none.

For the most part, Mechery Grall works with the same soft, opaque microfiber, chosen for its comfortable fit and the fact it’s made from 100% recycled material, to minimize the brand’s environmental footprint. Hardware is gold-toned, for a hint of luxurious glimmer.

Her design inspiration comes from both the fashion world and the art one: the precise, unadorned lines of Schiaparelli; the all-black colour palette of French painter Soulages (Cosmogonie lingerie is always black); and the inherent, timeless femininity of Alaïa. Like Alaïa once did, Mechery Grall is one of a growing number of designers who have decided to disconnect from the classic rhythm of large, twice-yearly collections, and instead launches small capsule ranges throughout the year as inspiration strikes her.

Most recently, she’s introduced the brand’s first ever design in lace, plus a semi-sideless dress and a jewelry line designed to complement the lingerie and extend the Cosmogonie aesthetic throughout your wardrobe. Not that you need them to do it, since the lingerie is already very easy to style as outerwear! In fact, the website even suggests wearing these pieces as yogawear, sportswear or swimwear, calling Cosmogonie a “plural brand which offers a multiplicity of uses.”

It’s the French elegance at its summit.” For a more everyday look, she recommends throwing one of her bras or bodysuits under an oversized blazer and pairing it with jeans instead.

Since its introduction, Cosmogonie has also caught the eye of retail giant ASOS, for which it has launched an exclusive, lower-priced collection. Made from a different fabric but following the same graphic, all-black look accented by features such as bold cut outs, draped chains and charms, and plenty of elastic strapping, it’s available in sizes XS to 3XL.
