Peachaus: Laid-Back, Low-Impact Lingerie and Loungewear
By ESTELLE PULESTON
Peachaus is an ethical and sustainable brand launched in 2022 in the UK, which focuses on lingerie, sleep and athleisure-wear infused with a free-spirited Australia attitude.
It was founded by Gillian Ridley Whittle. After decades of experience in the fashion industry, including roles that involved buying lingerie for major retailers in the UK and Australia, she created Peachaus as a rebellion against the destruction, inequality and conformist attitude of the modern-day fashion ecosystem – as well as a revolt against uncomfortable, poorly-fitting bras.
Through Peachaus, she wanted to design “timeless pieces that let you breathe, move, and be yourself” while also pushing towards a more sustainable, slow fashion future. To that end, the brand is very transparent about the exact suppliers and factories it works with, with almost everything being made in Portugal from low impact, European-sourced raw materials.
The brand’s fabrics include ethically-produced cotton for the sleepwear range, recycled polyester for the activewear garments, soft and breathable bamboo for the seamless pieces, and recycled Italian laces for the rest of the lingerie collection.
Two of Peachaus’ most popular pieces are the Betula bra and Sakura bra, both launched as part of its 2022 debut. Betula is a lightweight, underwired balconette with floral lace cups and a point d’esprit band, while Sakura offers the reverse: sheer, point d’esprit cups and a floral lace back, as well a front closure with a golden clasp fastening that’s engraved with an Australian swallow.
That swallow motif also shows up on other hardware and, besides the bamboo pieces, all of the lingerie is adorned with a raised ‘Peachaus’ logo embroidery detail too. The brand has also collaborated with Jayne Goulding, an embroidery designer, to create an exclusive peach blossom embroidery that adorns some of its loungewear pieces, and Jess Hartley, a print designer, to design unique prints for its activewear.
Peachaus also aims to simplify bra sizing by swapping band sizes for a simple S, M, L system that aligns with the customer’s clothing size, while still offering a wide range of cup sizes for a good fit. The Betula and Sakura bras for example are available in S1 through L4 (equating to B-E cups) while the fuller-bust Lotus and Konara bras are instead offered in sizes S5 through L8.
Additionally, all of the products are designed to have a flexible fit, so that either side of your usual sizing should work too if you’d prefer a firmer or more relaxed feeling.
As part of its mission to build community and have a positive impact on both people and the planet, the brand also participates in a number of social initiatives. These range from hosting regular fit-focused pop-up events to help more women find a comfortable bra, through to speaking in schools and colleges about circular design in order to educate and inspire the next generation of fashion professionals and drive a more sustainable future for the industry.
Peachaus lingerie and sleepwear is available from sizes XS-XL, and to fit standard US bra sizes 32B to 36I. It’s priced from £18 to £60 (approx. $25 to $80) for lingerie separates, and up to £80 (approx. $110) for loungewear.
