Maredamare Beachwear: Leave It To The Italians

Maredamare ,the International Beachwear show held in Florence last July, offered an illuminating look at the international beachwear market. But what stayed with me was not simply the evolution of swimwear or the growing importance of resortwear. It was the unmistakable individuality of Italian design. For some of Italy’s most established beachwear designers, the swimsuit is only the beginning. A bikini becomes part of an evening look. A one-piece takes on the role of a bodysuit. A caftan, kimono or embellished dress moves effortlessly from beach to aperitivo.

This is not simply trend-following. It is the result of decades of research, experimentation and an intimate knowledge of fabric, construction and artisanal technique.  Examples like Margherita Mazzei, Raffaela D’Angelo and Jerry Tommolini offer three very different expressions of this Italian approach.

Margherita Mazzei, whose District label dates to 1995, brings together beachwear, lingerie and corsetry through sophisticated prints, color, transparency and body-conscious silhouettes. Bikinis and one-pieces share the collection with dresses, kimonos, kaftans and pareos, while macramé flowers and intricate details reveal her distinctly artisanal aesthetic.

RAFFAELA D’ANGELO

Raffaela D’Angelo takes a more couture-minded approach. Her Spring/Summer 2027 collection drew inspiration from Bali, combining natural fabrics with macramé, net techniques, embroidery and three-dimensional floral applications. Fluid caftans, jackets, skirts and shirts extend the story beyond the swimsuit.

Then there is Jerry Tommolini’s Pin-Up Stars, where beachwear becomes more glamorous and exuberant. Floral imagery, sculptural embellishment and jewelry-inspired details bring a sense of preciousness, while strong color and resort pieces carry the collection from beach to boat to evening.

Three designers. Three very different languages. Yet all three reveal something essential about Made in Italy: craftsmanship is not added to the design. It is part of the design itself. That distinction matters in a global market where trends travel instantly, and familiar silhouettes can appear everywhere. What is harder to replicate is the knowledge behind the designer’s eye, the choice of fabric, the artisan’s hand and the expertise that turns an idea into something distinctive.

Perhaps that is what stayed with me most from Maredamare. All of the designers showcased at the exposition were not simply following the conversation. They have spent years creating their own. And in an industry increasingly driven by global trends, individuality is the real luxury. It is what transforms the swimsuit from a seasonal necessity into something much more enduring: fashion.
