Motherhood ~ Belabumbum

COCKTAIL CHILDREN
I don’t have cocktail children.
They do not work rooms
Rely on pop culture icons or speak on the
swell of land bearing waves
Each one stands knee deep in the surf
Holding the ocean at bay by digging in
Toes firmly sinking in wet sand
Not dancing in the spray
Each one waiting, standing strong.
I think I taught them not to belong
To seek passion and pursue a goal
Not to worry about who likes them and
who they know
And now each one is alone.

I wrote this poem in 2007.  My children were 25, 23 and 19 at the time.  Each of my pregnancies was different; individual promises of what they would become. I thought I knew what motherhood was.  The birth of a child reveals the truth.  Nothing is for sure except the maternal instinct.  I had a wonderful role model.  But we are not our mothers.  We are part of our mothers, but we are each, from the womb, uniquely ourselves.

I wish I could have had access to Belabumbum’s Belly, Boudoir and Beyond collection as my body evolved during the physical and psychological marathon of maternity.  The ability to have two designs for the price of one, like the reversible dress (BA25) pictured here, would have supported my ever tightening budget and changing physique.  Constructed in a baby soft viscose/spandex fabric, this style is engineered to accommodate a busy lifestyle both before and after childbirth.
