The Sensual Magic Of Company XIV

By Marina Rybak

Getting straight to the point, the contemporary dance-theater group Company XIV is one of my favorites. Once upon a time I ventured out to Brooklyn despite the torrential rain to see a performance at the converted space on Bond Street, formerly a warehouse for tow trucks. I was unaware at the time that my act of faith placed me at the threshold of experiencing the sizzling magic of Company XIV. I was about to be initiated in its divine mysteries.

Sparks fly and the barriers are crossed when the electric mixture of corset-cinched, gender-bending, Baroque-greets-Burlesque sexy display explodes on stage, and the talented cast takes you for a spin and a thrill of a lifetime.

Company XIV is an innovative, bold vision of its founding Artistic Director and Choreographer Austin McCormick. The actual name alludes to the original inspiration, stretching to the reign of the “Sun King” Louis XIV.  The infusion of the various, eclectic genres, pop culture and literature influences, spiced up with a pinch of saucy lingerie transforms critically acclaimed productions into a visual, musical and sensuous feast.

I am highly entertained, when the stylish performance fuels my intellect, lifting me up into the heavenly pleasures. But I willingly follow the magic into the underworld of the earthly delights, where the riveting spectacle teases my instinct.

The new spellbinding production, “Murderous Masquerade” La Fete is on its way. It previews on the Halloween night October 31 and runs until December 9. So take a journey and immerse yourself in the inspirational alchemy of Company XIV. It is a trip you do not want to miss.
