Having lived through several seismic events in America’s history, I have learned a great deal about the underpinnings of our national heritage. I remember where I was when JFK was assassinated, my ire over Vietnam, the shame of Watergate, and the shock of 9/11. A country’s character is formed by its approach to challenges so enormous, they could not be imagined. We may be many things in the United States, with many contradicting opinions but there is one non-disputable fact, we are free. This freedom perpetuates a spirit that is very difficult to find anywhere else in the world. It is a belly fire that comes from all the discord and diversity that we are permitted to own. To paraphrase journalist and author Thomas Friedman who, I believe, described the American dynamic perfectly shortly after 9/11: this enemy underestimated the American spirit. They do not understand who we are. They thought that such a cataclysmic event would beat us down, but Americans never give up after a catastrophe because they love their flag. They appreciate what it means and they will always come together in order to build a better and stronger union.
Next week is July 4, our nation’s birthday. In America it is a celebration of families, fortitude and freedom.
