My first real introduction to the Pacific palette happened some years back when I attended my brother in law’s wedding in San Obispo, California. I came prepared in classic NYC cocktail attire, a simple black knit tank dress with matching flats. Everyone knew where I came from and this time, it had nothing to do with my accent. It became clear that casual on the West coast is a synonym for colorful. Sunshine, warm nights and blue skies have created a culture of playful laid back charm that gives California its own unique character. It’s that girl next store appeal.
Meeting the Honeydew Intimates team last week during my recent trip to LA, an opportunity that had previously escaped me, only served to reinforce my perception that design rooted in the California ethos is an original mixture of seductive and trendy fun. Honeydew is a family affair anchored by the famous rumba panty, a key item success story that has fueled the brand’s entire approach to product development. Excellent merchandising and a devotion to the power of color stories, has catapulted this company to one success story after another. This time it’s their number one selling Emma Elegance chemise, already a best seller in over 150 specialty stores as well as a few of the big guys. When I asked Benny to narrow it down, he told me it was like choosing which of his sons he liked best.
