Leggings Are NOT Pants. . .
It has come to my attention that not everyone is aware of the fact that leggings or footless tights are not always pants. Of course there are exceptions to this rule, but lets discuss the proper way to wear these unique legwear varieties.
First, it’s important to define the difference between “Leggings” and “Footless Tights”.
Footless Tights are just that, tights without feet…which are sheer on the bum and not intended to be worn without some sort of coverage on the rear. Footless Tights are often more ornate, or made in open weave patterns. They will also have a gusset, which is another indicator that they are not to be worn without covering on the bum (the gusset is the ….). A good rule of thumb should be if they look like tights think of them as tights NOT leggings and style them accordingly.
Leggings on the other hand, can be worn without bum-coverage. Leggings are typically made of a thicker material and have substantial coverage on the rear and front so it can be worn without fear of being exposed. However, some leggings will still need a tunic-type top to refine the look.
The only real exception to that is for Jeggings. Jeggings are a combination of leggings and Jeans that are made of uber-stretchy, completely opaque material. These are meant to simulate the ultra skinny jeans that have become a fashion staple in the past few year…without cutting off one’s circulation.
Sometimes the manufacturer will call a product that is clearly footless tights, leggings (and visa versa)…so make no mistake, and always take a quick peek at your rear before leaving the house. If you can see your panties or the edge of your bum you are probably wearing footless tights, not leggings, and you really should cover up…
I think I just heard paparazzi everywhere slap their heads in frustration and say: Shhhhhhh! You’ll put us out of business!
