The Gift
It’s November 26th, the day after Thanksgiving, the start of the holiday season and my 30th wedding anniversary. It’s a big gift giving time of year, but somehow, the whole process has become a chore. Time has erased the need to own “things”. Experience has taught me that a true gift is a rare luxury; a combination of thought, pleasure and emotion. A great gift is not only a joy to receive but a delight to give. It is the birth of a beautiful memory. On our first anniversary, my husband gave me a dozen red roses plus one white bud. In his note, he said that he hoped that the white roses would one day outnumber the red. For each celebration after that, I received another crimson bouquet plus an increment of white blooms for each year of our marriage. This went on until my 10th anniversary, when I was presented with a big blue box from Tiffany’s inside of which was a hand wrought sterling silver long stem rose dipped in 24ct gold. He said that this unique and artistic treasure was a permanent replacement for the flowers I loved but always faded in a few days. It was a moment of pure indulgence, but the memory of the exquisite feeling that the occasion evoked was the greatest gift of all.
What made that gesture so poignant was that it was a sentimental diversion in a busy lifestyle crammed with career, children and motion. Sometimes, in chaotic times, a gift of luxury that is meant to make the recipient feel special is the most generous expression one can make. So when I saw the hand painted silk kimono robes that Samantha Chang created for this holiday season, I was smitten. Each print varies slightly as they are each the work of an individual craftsman. Available for immediate delivery, there are seven different floral color compositions, each one an exclusive work of art. Draping the body in the elegant richness of 19 mm Chinese silk, they are also the ultimate floral delivery, a permanent keepsake of luxury and sensuality. Imagine how good giving could feel.
