As a 14-year breast cancer survivor, I’ve walked the path that so many women find themselves on—navigating the unknowns, managing the fear, and learning to advocate for my own health. When it comes to your health, no one knows your body better than you do. Yet, advocating for yourself in a doctor’s office can sometimes feel intimidating. I’ve been there, and I understand the hesitance to question, the fear of the unknown, and the overwhelming nature of medical jargon. But I can’t stress enough how crucial it is to speak up, ask questions, and ensure that your concerns are taken seriously.
Your health is your most valuable asset, and while it’s easy to get caught up in the demands of everyday life—work, family, responsibilities—nothing is more important than your well-being. As women, we often put others first, but when it comes to health, you must put yourself first. Trust your instincts, and if something feels off, pursue it until you get the answers you need.Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle: Your Best Defense
Living a healthy lifestyle is not just about what you eat or how often you exercise—it’s about a holistic approach to well-being. It’s about managing stress, finding balance, and prioritizing self-care in a world that often asks too much of us. Here are some key aspects to keep in mind:
- Nourish Your Body: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains fuels your body and supports your immune system.
- Stay Active: Regular exercise doesn’t just keep you fit; it also reduces stress, improves mood, and boosts your overall health.
- Manage Stress: Chronic stress can take a toll on your body. Finding ways to manage it—whether through meditation, yoga, or simply taking time for yourself—is essential.
- Get Enough Sleep: Rest is when your body heals and regenerates. Prioritizing good sleep hygiene is key to maintaining your health.
- Regular Check-Ups: Don’t skip your routine health screenings. Regular check-ups and screenings are crucial in catching potential issues early.
Top 5 Signs to Look Out for During Self-Breast Exams
Performing regular self-breast exams is one of the most proactive steps you can take in monitoring your breast health. Here are five signs to look out for:
- Lumps or Thickening: Any unusual lump or thickening in your breast or underarm area should be checked by a doctor.
- Changes in Size or Shape: If one breast suddenly becomes larger or changes shape, it’s worth discussing with your healthcare provider.
- Nipple Discharge: Any discharge from the nipple, especially if it’s bloody, should be evaluated.
- Skin Changes: Dimpling, redness, or any change in the skin texture on your breast could be a sign of something that needs further examination.
- Persistent Pain: While breast pain is common and often benign, persistent pain in one area should be investigated.
What to Do If You Find a Lump
Finding a lump during a self-exam can be alarming, but it’s important to remember that not all lumps are cancerous. If you discover a lump, here’s what you should do:
- Stay Calm: Most lumps are benign, especially in younger women. Don’t panic.

- Follow Through: If your doctor suggests further testing or a biopsy, follow through with their recommendations. Early detection is key.
Easing Stress and Protecting Your Well-Being
As someone who runs a business, I understand how easy it is to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life. But no business, no matter how successful, is worth sacrificing your health for. It’s important to ease stress wherever possible—whether that’s delegating tasks, setting boundaries, or simply taking a day off when you need it.
Your well-being is the foundation of everything else in your life. Without your health, you can’t be there for your loved ones, your work, or yourself. Prioritize it, protect it, and don’t be afraid to advocate for it. After all, you are your own best advocate.
