Put Yourself First

By Margaret Shrum

As simple as it sounds, putting yourself first can be one of the most challenging acts of self-care.  Somehow, taking care of the needs of others can feel more comfortable or easier than asking the question “what do I want right now?”  We all have families, friends, loved ones who need us sometimes. It can be challenging to balance our own needs with the needs of others we take care of regularly. It can be a tough choice to carve out time to be alone, to engage in hobbies or interests, but that is different than having no choice at all. Alternatively, taking care of others can sometimes be an excuse to avoid making changes in your life and staying within your comfort zone.

Who can benefit when you commit to putting your needs first, besides the obvious? When you are happy and living authentically, everyone that comes in contact with you can feel your positive vibe. You may begin attracting new friends and exciting opportunities might appear just based on your shift in priorities. Your family may notice a more relaxed version of you, your partner or love interest could find you more attractive. Even more exciting, you might see how incredible you truly are when you stay in your pleasure and put your needs first.

What does it entail to put yourself first?  It begins with investing time thinking about your desires are and then incorporating it consistently into your life. Often that means checking in with how you feel as you make decisions and consciously committing to doing things that feel good. Sometimes it means saying no to people, so that you can choose to focus on yourself. This means that you might disappoint, frustrate and upset others who are used to having you at their disposal. This may feel very uncomfortable, but with practice it gets easier to choose what feels right over time.

Why put yourself first? Because, this is your lifetime and you have a choice to create the life of your dreams or settle for what is dealt to you. People who are successful, make the choice to go for their big desire and take the action is required to create their success. Getting clear on what you want to do and how you will spend time investing in your goals can be exciting and for some a bit scary at the same time. In the end, it’s your choice on how you spend your time and what you create in your lifetime.
I invite you to begin now, make the decision to actively put your needs first today!  Start with one act of self-care a day and research what you truly desire. As you come up with new ideas, make a list and then prioritize them. If it helps, schedule them in your calendar.  Stay in your pleasure amidst the chaos of every day chores with a ritual that has you state your intentions for putting yourself first. One day at a time, create the life you have always dreamed of.
