“Sex is in the Heel,” asserts Cyndi Lauper’s bouncy, catchy tune from her debut musical “Kinky Boots”. The co-creation of Grammy winning, legendary pop diva and Tony award-winner Harvey Fierstein, long anticipated theatrical production is up to an auspicious start.
I am a fan of the original film, an independent charmer and a mood enhancer with a big heart. The story is about a young shoe factory owner, who inherits the business. He reinvents the assortment with the help of the flamboyant drag queen, delving into the erotic footwear for men to keep the factory afloat.
High voltage sexy musical expands the message of the universal love, shared humanity within the spectrum of our diversity, self-esteem and self-approval. The concept of the “boss” with the integrity, who deeply cares for his employees and is willing, to think outside the box to save the jobs is deeply appealing to the audiences during the time of the present economic uncertainties. The feel-good entertainment with plenty of whimsical footwork is steadily gaining full steam to become a contender for a Tony Award.
In the meantime the “Phantom” of Kinky Boots have been delighting the subterranean audience of the NYC subway system between the Union and Times Square.
I have attempted to capture the image of the street performer, who is delivering the joy to the passers by and loving every moment of it to boot. Why should only girls have fun anyway?
