Hanky Panky Celebrates Its Heritage

March 31, 2017

Hanky Panky handkerchief bra and panties on Lingerie Briefs

I remember my mother’s 40th surprise birthday party. I was 11 and I thought my mom was so old. The banner at the entrance read “Life begins at 40”. I presumed that my aunt had hung it there to make her feel better about this provocative milestone. I loved my mother something fierce, but alas, I only had 40 years myself before she was gone. But 40 years is a long time and the building blocks of a person’s character constructed during such an enduring relationship are formidable. Small details prevail, floating through our memories, defining the individual and embedding their meaning into our psyches. One such vignette was my mother’s handkerchiefs. She seemed a bit quaint to me with those embroidered hankies in her handbag. But years later, I recognize that they were part of who she was; a warm and gracious lady whose loyalty, pursuit of excellence and respect for individuality defined her as one of the classiest women I have ever known.

Every time I see an embroidered cotton handkerchief, I think of my mom. So when Hanky Panky decided to commemorate their 40th anniversary this year with the resurrection of the iconic intimates that forged the Hanky Panky brand, I was all in. It’s a well-known industry story; 40 years ago Gale Epstein gave her friend Lida Orzeck a bra and panty set that she designed from handkerchiefs. This simple gesture sparked a partnership that has given the market a powerhouse lingerie company.  Although this current collection, made from actual cotton hankies, are precious examples of the brands aesthetic, it is the Hanky Panky ethos that is worthy of reflection. Remaining loyal to their heritage of flirty, quality lingerie made in the USA, they have managed to sustain their liaison with their suppliers and customers without compromise. Just as my mom’s influence on me has lived on, I have no doubt they will endure for years to come.

What Is An Empowered Woman?

March 30, 2017

By ALI CUDBY

Woman's Empowerment on Lingerie Briefs

When I hear people talk about empowerment, it often seems to be connected to ways women think and feel about themselves.

Certainly, in the world of lingerie stores, we tend to connect women “looking and feeling their best” with “being empowered.”

In 2004, when I first found bras that fit, it was a transformational moment for me. It changed how I felt in my body. It changed how I saw myself. I felt empowered when I shifted my thinking about myself and my bras.

That theme is reflected in ways “empowering women” gets expressed in the media. Check out just a few descriptions of what makes an empowered woman:

An empowered woman…

  • Takes responsibility for herself
  • Makes her own rules
  • Honors herself: mind, body and spirit
  • Lives by her inner compass
  • Empowers other women
  • Forgives
  • Expresses herself unapologetically

That’s just a few I pulled from looking at an array of articles. All good stuff on this list of traits of empowered women.

At the same time, the traits on this list seem almost exclusively self-directed. As if empowerment is mostly a thing women do individually.

Not to channel my inner Carrie Bradshaw, but…I couldn’t help but wonder…

Is empowerment by building self enough? Or is it selling the mission short?

I couldn’t shake the belief that an empowered woman’s opportunity was larger…but what, exactly?

Turns out, there’s a LOT more to it.

The benefits to empowering women are much bigger than the individual. In fact, a system to empower women is a matter of economic, societal and professional growth.

U.N. Global Compact on Lingerie BriefsEmpowering women systematically is so vital; it’s the subject of a new priority initiative from the United Nations Global Compact.

Why?

Because empowering women worldwide goes straight to the mother of all drivers – the financial – and it packs a wallop. Estimates show that “empowering women across the globe could improve the global GDP with 23 trillion US dollars in 2025.” (Forbes)

According to the Women’s Empowerment Principles, empowering women to participate fully in economic life across all sectors and throughout all levels of economic activity is essential to:

  • Build strong economies;
  • Establish more stable and just societies;
  • Achieve internationally agreed goals for development, sustainability and human rights;
  • Improve quality of life for women, men, families and communities; and
  • Propel businesses’ operations and goals.

So what does all this big money mean for the softer side of empowerment? A look at how the UN Global Compact defines “empowerment” is enlightening:

“Empowerment means that people – both women and men – can take control over their lives: set their own agendas, gain skills (or have their own skills and knowledge recognized), increase self-confidence, solve problems, and develop self-reliance. It is both a process and an outcome.” (Emphasis mine)

It’s time to step into a grander and more ambitious view of “empowerment.”

Empowerment needs to include the heart-centered side of helping women feel like their best selves – but it’s not enough. To create the best outcomes for women around the world, we must show the POWER in empowerment.

Women need to embrace our potential to impact money and business globally. Otherwise, empowerment – just like other facets in the realm of women – may end up demoted in importance.

Just like so many things in life and in business, the soft side is vitally important, but it’s not enough. To create real change, the heart of a mission must be knit into the fabric of consistent systems for growth.

A Whale of a Bra ~ Empreinte Cassiopée Spacer

March 28, 2017

Whale watching in Cabo San Lucas on Lingerie Briefs

I went whale watching this past weekend determined to see one in the wild, since I have not had the pleasure since I began living here in 2011. That’s because the season peaks in early winter, good for tourism, bad for me. I am always away, in Paris, NY and the rest of the lingerie market, hunting and gathering product information while the rest of my friends take countless sojourns into the ocean to site these magnificent beasts. The water’s around Cabo San Lucas are a migratory destination and breeding ground for many species. Witnessing these humpbacks in the wild breaching the ocean’s surface, swimming with their young or just rising for air before the inevitable dive is poetic. These 40 ton mammals are incredibly graceful, but did you know that to merely propel through the water requires energy equivalent to a 550 horsepower machine. Now that’s engineering.

Empreinte Cassiopee spacer bra on Lingerie Briefs

This fact is what brings me to Empreinte’s new Cassiopée spacer bra, which by the way I was wearing throughout my whale watch. This style is the first spacer bra I have ever successfully worn all day. Usually, spacer cups just don’t have the necessary leverage to defy larger breast gravity during an active day. That’s not a criticism of the few I’ve tried. It’s merely a statement regarding the challenge of supporting a G cup with lighter weight materials. This bra, which took Empreinte 2 ½ years to perfect, is a combination of a breathable feather light fabric that is invisible under my clothes while it sustains front and center lift. To accomplish this is for 30-42, C-G cups is, in my opinion, a feat of artful construction. Nature’s dynamics and a bra so comfortable that I forgot about it; that’s a whale of grateful experience.
