Featured Designer ~ Louis Réard

July 24, 2017

It’s peak swim season. The Miami swimshow is happening as I write. So how appropriate that Alison chose to feature swim designer Louis Réard this week in our Gallery.  Réard, the inventor of the “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Bikini” during WWII, is having coming back as his iconic brand makes an entrance for the 2017 market. Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Bikini ~ Réard Swimwear

By ALISON CONNOLLY

Reard Swimwear on Lingerie Briefs

Here’s a bit of swimwear design trivia for you:  The bikini was invented in Paris by Louis Réard in 1946 following the end of World War II.  At the time, this radical design was intended to reflect the new attitude of women who were feeling liberated and strong following the war.  That brings us to another piece of swimwear trivia: The bikini was named after Bikini Atoll, the test site for the atomic bomb located in the South Pacific.  Needless to say, the reaction to this two-piece design was explosive!  In fact, it marked a definitive shift in the covered-up world of women’s fashions.  It wasn’t long before Hollywood embraced this skin-baring style, and created icons out of the women who wore it (such as Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe, and Ursula Andress).

All of this is relevant because the Réard name disappeared for decades, only to be brought back with a bang in 2017!  Once again based in Paris, the brand has recently re-launched with every intention of gaining its Hollywood elite status.  The clean, sophisticated lines of this swimwear brand are somewhat reminiscent of Eres Paris, with similar prices too.  But the brand wants to ensure that this is because they use the highest technology fabrics with the utmost attention to detail during each stage of the design, construction and manufacturing process.  If you look at the product specs for any particular swimwear design on their website, you get a sense of this attention toward creating the perfect fit.  Right now the brand designs mainly for the B-D cup customer, but it seems likely that this size selection will increase as the brand continues to grow.  It’s worth taking note that the Réard brand is not just a bikini label, it’s a full swimwear and beachwear line with styles that match a variety of poolside needs!

In the meantime, see the full selection of the new arrivals for this recently re-launched label here: https://www.reard.com/en-us

Artist’s Vision ~ Layneau Boudoir Wear

July 21, 2017

My daughter Kate never intended to become a figure skating coach. She attended top academic colleges in the Northeast, eventually receiving her MFA (Master of Fine Arts). Her dream was a career in art. Skating was her passion. But life happens and a melting job market led her to an ice rink.  She stayed because she’s good at it, despite the fact that some question the purpose of her academic pursuit. But I beg to differ. Her exposure to and absorption in the art world has informed her teaching style and melded seamlessly into the work she creates. With this installation (Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art) she traces an original figure on an icy canvas while she, herself, glides seamlessly across its surface. The level of technical skill required is hidden by the elegance of movement across the arena. This piece pays homage to female stamina and grace

When I first saw the Layneau Collection in Paris several years ago, I knew I was looking at a piece of art. The attention of this brand to complex sewing details is exemplary. The intricate lace appliqué placement reveals a well-schooled grasp of the foundation of lingerie design. Brand owner and creator, Kaaren Bedi’s background in costume, bridal and jewelry design is unmistakable. Although her work is expensive at retail, it is priceless as an art form. One might consider it 360 degree luxury. Leaver’s lace is strategically placed on 19mm silk charmeuse. The fabric floats over the torso forming glamorous intimate sculptures worthy of any boudoir gallery. Recognized by photographers, respected fashion magazines and celebrities, Layneau celebrates the woman as subject, not an object in the story of her life.
