This fashion editorial, shot by Stephanie Hynes during her recent sojourn in Paris is a testimonial to French lingerie. Through her unique lens, she addresses the question: Why is French lingerie so revered? To us, the answer is intrinsic in the DNA of the French culture. Every facet of daily life is infused with the pursuit of pleasure; the French way of doing things caters to the senses. Some call it “savoir faire”. We call it the art of seduction. From the Baroque style of the Palace of Versailles to the translucent elegance of I.M. Pei’s Pyramid at the Louvre, the French design ideal is captured in Stephanie’s photo essay. Replete with light, gorgeous underpinnings and chic locations, these images reflect our interpretation of luxurious lingerie. They are also homage to women who understand that real beauty is best portrayed in how one feels inside. That is why, for centuries, French women have worn beautiful underwear simply to empower themselves.

Since the age of 16, when I spent a summer living with a family above their cheese factory in Reims, France, I have been enamored by the elegance and aesthetic of the French culture. Maybe it was the Veuve Clicquot champagne that was served freely at the dinner table, or the chocolate éclairs I managed to overeat while exploring the plethora of patisseries with my teenage friends.
In college, while studying the art and language that is at the heart of the French psyche, I could not ignore the elements of style and taste that inform this seductive society.
The French have an uncanny ability to incorporate feminine charm and exquisite detail into the everyday fabric of their lives.
They just have a certain “savoir-faire”.

Yesterday, I watched the new documentary on Netflix, “Feminists: What Were They Thinking?”. It stirred some hardcore memories of the culture in which I came of age. It is set in the 1970’s when powerful female voices emerged to rally the call for social equality. The story centers on Cynthia MacAdam’s book, Emergence, her photography of women who have been instrumental in the struggle for Women’s Rights. These images portray women who felt the freedom to be what they were. Constrained by a “Mad Men” culture, they discuss the challenges confronted as they went for broke to claim their own sense of self. While I was watching the broadcast, I thought, there have been women on this slow walk to liberation for decades before this particular story began. These were individuals, like those featured in this film, who sought to provide a way to empower women. Of course they inhabited every walk of life, but in the world of lingerie, Simone Pérèle is a prescient example.
