It’s been raining all summer in the Northeast. So when the sun broke through last week for two consecutive days, it was a pleasure to actually sit outside on my porch and witness a butterfly floating through the milkweeds. The rainy weather has kept us cocooned since spring.
Apparently hope is blooming again because the energy and positive attitude I felt at the
aesthetic of the French culture. Maybe it was the Veuve Clicquot champagne that was served freely at the dinner table, or the chocolate éclairs I managed to overeat while exploring the plethora of patisseries with my teenage friends.
I spent every summer of my childhood camping on the islands in Lake George, N.Y. in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. For me, Teddy Roosevelt’s famous quote: “Speak softly and carry a big stick” has always informed my approach to communication. Keep the dialog warm, calm, and open but make sure it is powered by an infrastructure of facts. My opinion is that this is the most productive way to make a statement.
I was rummaging through an old box of vintage costume jewelry the other day and was struck by how unique these pieces were. I keep thinking how matronly I thought they were when my mother showed them to me years ago. Now, they seem so interesting. I wonder how they might look pinned on a particular linen jacket in my closet.
