La Fille d'O as featured on Lingerie Briefs

For months now (maybe years), I’ve longed to profile La Fille d’O, the most daring, visionary, body-savvy, fit-savvy, and also fashion-savvy among today’s avant garde lingerie providers (and there are plenty of them). Whatever you think underwear is supposed to be, this indie Belgian lingerie wholesaler-etailer-retailer is here to dispute your premise. Yet I hesitated to write it up. La Fille has so much going on—an electrifying inventory that re-prioritizes the erogenous zones and tests their limits–that I was left stymied. What to include?… Read More

Red Bubble Botticelli's Birth of Venus Leggings Designed by Art History as featured on Lingerie Briefs

I’m taking a long, hard look at Botticelli’s Birth of Venus (you know…the goddess of love standing on her half-shell). Or rather–I’m seeing her face, blown up and maneuvered over the knee and thigh of a pair of polyester-elastane stretch leggings, her golden tresses cascading down the other leg. This is but one example among the hundreds (no, make that thousands) of pairs of graphic, photo-printed stretch leggings now bombarding the market. Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon? Check. Mona Lisa? Check. Jackson Pollock? Check. Magritte, Kandinsky, Dali, Vermeer, Van Gogh?… Read More

FIT Rose Exhibit as featured on Lingerie Briefs

“Won’t you come into my garden? I would like my roses to see you.”
Richard Brinsley Sheridan, 19th century Irish playwright and politician

There they are, jam-packed profusions of them, jostling for space as they shamelessly beckon passersby in front of every self-respecting bodega in New York. I’m talking about roses (and other flowers too, but mainly roses), brightening our dingy streets—and our lives–in these, fingers crossed, waning months of Covid. And now they’re conspiring to lure us inside the Museum at FIT to see Ravishing: The Rose in Fashion, an exhibit of over 180 garments and accessories (Schiaparelli … Charles James … Balenciaga … Dior … Comme des Garcons, Van Noten, McQueen, Rocha—wham!Read More

The world was put on notice this summer when Billie Eilish ditched her oversize grunge-wear and posed on the cover of British Vogue in a rosy pink corset, complete with buckled waist cincher—a Gucci confection custom-designed for her. And just to add to the explosion of va-va-voom satiny femininity, beneath that corset was a set of lacy Agent Provocateur underwear, while accompanying it were a pair of latex gloves and leggings. (Plus, Eilish’s green hair got transformed into wavy blond.)

Then a month later, another pop sensation, Dua Lipa, showed up on the cover of Vanity Fair in a corset-like white lace Chanel bodysuit.… Read More

Almost Braless

By LINDA DYETTAlmost Braless - Linda Dyett, photo - Sara Messinger NYTimes featured on Lingerie BriefsI live in the East Village—notorious for its (fantastic) restaurants, its quirky little retail businesses (a goodly number of which, including Azeleas, the lingerie shop, have survived the shutdown), and the hordes of NYU, Cooper Union, St. John’s, and New School students, as well as the oddball artists, designers, and freelancers who occupy the neighborhood. This area, like Bushwick and Williamsburg, is something of a style bellwether. So when I began noticing dozens of girls and women walking around braless beneath their slip dresses (accessorized with Doc Martens boots), their cropped T-shirts inside baggy overalls, and their oversize vintage dresses, I recognized it as a trend.… Read More

By LINDA DYETTNegative Underwear as featured on Lingerie BriefsFor several decades now, I’ve been writing about fashion—a passion of mine—every aspect of it, from design and fabrication to merchandising, retailing, and etailing. And always I look for the restless leading edge—the clothes (including underwear) that turn away from predictable, cookie cutter styles and capture–or better yet intuit and inform–the mood and needs of the changing times.

That’s what Negative Underwear, the brand with the unusual name, is all about. It was quick to sense the emergence of what’s come to be known as body positivity.Read More
